Forest School East Grinstead

Fun & adventure in the great outdoors

Our East Grinstead kindergarten opened in 2018 – the first fully outdoor setting in Mid Sussex and is located in woodland at East Grinstead Sports Club. We are lucky to have a huge outdoor space to play in & explore. Over the years we have grown and developed the site, creating camps for our younger & older children & a separate space for our holiday club children. After gaining planning permission in 2020 we also now have a large yurt on the adjacent field which provides us with another sheltered, cosy area for the children to play, a cosy log burner to keep us warm and a garden to grow fruit & vegetables.

We are an early years setting with a difference! Children get the opportunity to garden, play in the sand, paint, draw, sing, dance, play, enjoy using tools in the woodwork area with our trained Forest School leaders and as they get older help to cook campfire treats. In May the woodland is carpeted with bluebells and looks gorgeous. We are very close to Kingscote Station so we get to see the steam trains of the Bluebell railway pass by too, which is always a highlight of our day. Younger children can join us in our ‘Acorn camp’ when they are 2 years old for shorter days, or we can accommodate napping little ones in the afternoon – come along and see for yourself.

As well as the woodland we can use the adjacent field for lots of games, parachute play, races and to watch the steam trains from the Bluebell Railway go past. Hearing the whistles of the train and watching them steam past is a real highlight of our days. It is a magical setting!

Why choose us?

The majority of our staff are trained (or currently in training to be) Forest School Leaders. As a result woodwork & working with tools is important to us, we like to have campfires for cooking & keeping warm in the colder months & we embrace all the seasons! We have weekly visits from Tiny Tekkers who keep the children active & entertained with football skills. We also arrange regular visitors to Treehoppers to offer different activities to the children e.g. visits from the police, ambulance & fire service, a visiting farm, Sussex Wildlife Trust and external music providers.
